FROM YOUR GIRLFRIEND, DR. K!
Hey Girlfriend! It’s your girlfriend, Dr. K (aka Khnuma Simmonds, PhD) and I am so grateful that you are here so allow me to share a little bit about myself (the nutshell version! LOL) I am a boy mom of two energetic princes, a dancer, healer, survivor, advocate and intuitive entrepreneur. As the Founder and Visionary of Girlfriendism International, LLC - a conglomerate of multiple businesses aimed at empowering women - I have chosen to create a reality that feels like my favorite vacation, coolest girl’s night out and most enlightening spiritual conversation ever...EVERY DAY! To date, I have hosted annual retreats in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Greece, Indonesia and Thailand alongside over 100 women combined from the U.S. Virgin Islands, North America, South America and beyond - but I didn’t start out this way of course!

The Girlfriendism brand was born from the inception of my first business in 2011 - a cozy, brick and mortar fashion boutique called My Girlfriend’s Closet (MGCSTX) (it was literally the size of a closet! LOL) and a simultaneous, decade-long journey as both a domestic violence survivor and non-profit executive (yes...two things can be true at the same time!). Fast forward to 2017 (the year of two unprecedented category five hurricanes which I experienced) and 2019 (the global COVID19 pandemic which we all experienced), my business not only transformed but expanded to Girlfriendism International, LLC. From this humble island business that was inspired by the
women of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands to my now 20+ years of non profit management, mental health advocacy and anti-violence leadership for women and girls around the world, GirlfriendismTM has grown into a global wellness and lifestyle brand created to connect, empower and transform women through the diverse areas of fashion, fitness, wellness, business, philanthropy, travel and love.

In 2025, my team has grown from one unpaid full-time employee (that was me!) to two brick and mortar boutiques with five associates, two full time employees and a pool of almost 15 consultants located from the V.I. to the Philippines and beyond! As we continue to grow in our collective mission, our focus will encompass three core areas: Girlfriendism Fashion (retail boutiques), Girlfriendism Wellness (holistic services) and Girlfriendism HOPE (non profit/community advocacy). The women who have inspired it all and continue to grow this international network of friendship, are my girlfriends! To those who will join this global movement and new ‘ism’ for love and friendship, including YOU, I say (envision this in my high pitched voice, Virgin Islands sunkissed smile and wide open arms...ready, set, go!):

Girlfriendism Retreat is an annual event that is hosted in honor of National Girlfriend's Day on August 1st with alternating locations between the U.S. Virgin Islands and a global destination. We envisioned a global movement that would spotlight the women entrepreneurs and culture of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and with the trust that these women, whom we call girlfriends, have bestowed upon our my amazing team, we are no longer dreaming about this vision — we are living it!
